Travel

Syros being an island can be reached either by plane or by boat.

Here is travel information about the airport, flights, and ferries.

To get to Syros you must first fly into Athens International Airport (ATH). From there, you can either take a short domestic flight to Syros’s national airport (JSY) or take a ferry from one of Athens’ ports (Piraeus, Rafina, or Lavrio).

As an alternative, you could travel to Mykonos International Airport (JMK) and take a ferry to Syros. The crossing takes as little as 25-30 minutes on a high-speed ferry or up to 1 hour and 20 minutes on a conventional ferry. Several crossings per day are available.

Syros Airport:

The flight from Athens Airport to Syros Airport takes about 35 minutes, and there are several departures at different times of the day.
Syros Airport is located 3 kilometers from the port of Ermoupolis, to the south of the island, on the eastern edge of the village of Manna. Its official name is “Syros Island National Airport – Demetrius Vikelas”, named after the great Greek scholar, poet, and writer who was born in Syros in 1835.

Flight info:

  • SKY express operates regular direct flights from Athens International Airport (ATH) year-round.
  • Aegean Airlines operates seasonal direct flights from Thessaloniki (SKG).

Syros Port:
The port of Ermoupolis is one of the safest natural harbors in Greece, as it lies deep within a bay.

  • From Piraeus: There are daily ferry connections between Piraeus and Syros, with many routes available. The trip by ferry takes about 2 hours.
  • From Rafina: Routes operate mainly during the summer months, usually with an intermediate stop at another island. The total duration ranges from 2.5 to 6 hours.
  • From Lavrio:Operates only in summer, with weekly routes. The duration is around 5 hours.

Additional info on Syros:

Syros (Greek: Σύρος) is the capital of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea, and one of the most historically and culturally significant islands of Greece. The island is known for its rich architectural heritage, combining Neoclassical, Cycladic, and modern influences. Syros has been an important center of trade, arts, and administration since the 19th century, leaving a visible mark on the island’s towns, especially in Ermoupolis, the capital.

Ermoupolis is a vibrant town built on hills surrounding the natural harbor. It is renowned for its grand Neoclassical mansions, public buildings, and squares, reflecting the island’s prosperity during the 19th century. The town is also home to important cultural institutions, such as the Apollo Theater, one of the oldest opera houses in Greece, and the Syros Industrial Museum, highlighting the island’s commercial and industrial past. Even after the transformations of modern times, Ermoupolis has retained its unique charm, offering visitors a lively combination of historical architecture, cultural events, and picturesque streets.

Other settlements, like Ano Syros, provide a glimpse into the island’s medieval past with narrow cobbled streets, Venetian-style houses, and breathtaking views over the Aegean. The island also boasts beautiful beaches, natural harbors, and cultural festivals, making it a perfect destination for both history enthusiasts and those looking to relax by the sea.
